TIMBER HARVESTING PROCESS

A successful timber harvest starts long before the first tree is cut. It starts with understanding your property, your goals, and developing a plan that makes sense.

At High Mountain Logging, we guide landowners through the entire process, from the first property walk to the final payment. Whether you're interested in improving forest health, generating income, reducing fire risk, or preparing land for future use, we help you understand your options and what to expect along the way.

STEP 1. Walk the Property

Every project starts with a conversation and a walk through the land.

We'll look at the timber, access, terrain, and overall condition of the property. Just as important, we'll talk about your goals. Every landowner has different priorities, and those priorities help determine the best path forward.

STEP 2. Develop a Plan

Once we've evaluated the property, we'll develop a plan based on your goals and the realities of the land.

Some projects focus on maximizing timber value. Others focus on thinning, forest health, defensible space, or long-term management. We'll explain the options, discuss what is realistic, and provide a clear proposal before any work begins.

STEP 3. Permits and Preparation

If permits are required, we handle the process and work with the Oregon Department of Forestry to make sure everything is completed properly.

We'll also address environmental considerations, access issues, and any special requirements before operations begin.

STEP 4. Marketing the Timber

Before harvesting starts, we work to secure the best available markets for your timber.

Different logs have different values, and different mills pay differently. We take the time to match timber to the right buyers and maximize the value of the harvest whenever possible.

STEP 5. Harvest Operations

Once planning, permits, and markets are in place, harvesting begins.

Our team handles the day-to-day operation, including felling, yarding, loading, and trucking. Throughout the process, we focus on safety, environmental responsibility, and keeping you informed about progress.

STEP 6. Payment and Closeout

As logs are delivered, payments are made according to the mill's schedule.

Once the harvest is complete, we'll review the project with you and discuss any next steps, whether that's replanting, additional work, or long-term management of the property.

Why This Process Matters

A successful harvest isn't just about cutting trees. It's about making informed decisions, protecting your property, and getting the most value from the timber resource you've spent years growing.

Our job is to handle the details so you can move forward with confidence.

Timber Harvesting FAQs

How do I know if my timber is ready to harvest?

It depends on species, age, density, and your long-term goals. A site visit is the best way to determine the right timing.

How long does the process take?

Every property is different. Factors like permitting, weather, market conditions, and project size all affect the timeline.

What if conditions change during the project?

Unexpected challenges can happen. When they do, we'll discuss the situation with you and determine the best path forward.

What if timber prices change?

Markets fluctuate, which is why we work to secure buyers and pricing before operations begin whenever possible.

How will my property look when the project is finished?

That depends on the type of harvest. A thinning project will look very different from a clear-cut. We'll discuss expectations before work begins so there are no surprises.

Let's Get Started

If you're considering a timber harvest, the best place to start is a walk through the property. We'll take a look at what you have, discuss your goals, and help you understand the opportunities available to you.

Experience

With over 40 years of experience in the timber industry, the folks at High Mountain Resources know how to serve you. From quality workmanship to knowledge of other aspects of forestry, we give the landowner assurance that their job is being done right and that their property is in capable hands.

Practices

We address environmental challenges with an ethical approach. Streams, slopes and wildlife are all examples of these challenges. In these cases, we usually fall trees away from streams, limit work on steep and unstable slopes and usually leave habitat for wildlife to mitigate the effect of timber harvesting.

Selling Your Logs

Getting the most for your logs is more than just selling to the highest bidder. It is the art of knowing where to cut your logs to maximize grade and scale which are the basis on which logs are priced and sold. It is the ability and willingness to sort and sell logs to multiple buyers. That's where we can help.

Consulting

Not sure what to do with your timberland? We help landowners understand their options. Whether you're looking to harvest, manage for the long term, sell, or improve property access, we'll walk your land, listen to your goals, and provide honest guidance on what's realistic for your situation. No obligation—just straightforward advice.

Client Testimonials

Ken Groat has been a valuable part of our tree farm for many years. His knowledge of forest practices, timber markets, and operations has been a tremendous asset. Ken developed a strong relationship with my father and continues to be someone our family can count on for advice, guidance, and help when needed.

Will A., Family Tree Farm

We hired High Mountain Resources to log four acres of our woodland lot in 2025. Ken was professional, timely, and handled our neighbors' concerns with care. He even helped coordinate the access road and prepare the property for replanting. The entire process was straightforward, and our timber payments arrived promptly.

I highly recommend High Mountain Resources for small woodland projects.

Wayne H.

Ken was knowledgeable, cautious, and well connected with local timber buyers. He helped us make the most of our property while preserving its natural beauty and important shade trees. The finished property looks like a park, and we no longer worry about trees threatening our home. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.
