Sustainable Forestry Consultations

Sustainable forestry does not start with equipment. It starts with a conversation and a walk through the land.

Before any work happens, we want to understand what you have, what you want, and what the property actually needs. That takes time on the ground, not a guess from the road.

A consultation with High Mountain Resources is where that process begins.

Why a Consultation Matters

Every piece of timberland is different. Species mix, terrain, stand age, access, and ownership goals all shape what good forest management looks like on a given property.

Landowners come to us with a wide range of situations. Some have owned their land for decades and are thinking about what to do next. Others have recently acquired timber ground and are not sure what they have. Some are dealing with storm damage, overgrown stands, or fire risk and want to understand their options.

In all of those cases, the right starting point is the same: take a look at the land before drawing any conclusions.

What a Consultation Looks Like

We start by talking through your goals and any concerns you already have about the property. Then we walk it together.

On that walk, we are looking at:

  • Timber species, age, and overall stand health
  • Density and spacing, and whether thinning makes sense
  • Storm damage, downed material, or other hazards
  • Slope, terrain, and access for future equipment work
  • Streams, riparian areas, and sensitive habitat features
  • Signs of disease, pest pressure, or other issues

After the walk, we talk through what we found and what your options are.

What We Help You Think Through

Consultations cover whatever is most relevant to your property and your goals. Common topics include:

  • Whether thinning or harvesting makes sense now or in the future
  • How to reduce fire risk through spacing and fuel management
  • What habitat features are present and how to protect them
  • How storm damage should be addressed
  • What the land might look like in five, ten, or twenty years with active management
  • How to balance timber value with other land use goals

The goal is to give you honest information so you can make good decisions about your land.

Sustainable Forestry Starts With a Plan

Sustainable forestry means managing land in a way that keeps it productive, healthy, and valuable over time. That does not happen by accident. It happens because someone took the time to understand the land and make thoughtful decisions about how to manage it.

Consultations in Western Oregon

We serve private landowners throughout Western Oregon.

Local knowledge of timber types, terrain, and regional conditions is something we bring to every consultation. What works in one part of Oregon does not always apply in another, and that experience matters.

If you are unsure whether your property is within range, reach out. We are happy to take a look.

Consultation FAQs

How do I know if my timber is ready to harvest?

It depends on species, age, density, and your long-term goals. A site visit is the best way to determine the right timing.

What should I bring or prepare before a consultation?

Not much. If you have a property map or boundary information, that can be helpful. Otherwise, we just need to walk the land together.

How long does a consultation take?

That depends on the size and complexity of the property. Consultations can take a few hours between the walk and the follow-up conversation.

Do I have to commit to any work after a consultation?

No. A consultation is about understanding your options. What happens next is entirely up to you.

Let's Get Started

If you are trying to figure out what your land needs and where to start, a walk through the property is the best first step. We will take a look at what is there, talk through your goals, and help you understand what sustainable forestry looks like on your ground.

Experience

With over 40 years of experience in the timber industry, the folks at High Mountain Resources know how to serve you. From quality workmanship to knowledge of other aspects of forestry, we give the landowner assurance that their job is being done right and that their property is in capable hands.

Practices

We address environmental challenges with an ethical approach. Streams, slopes and wildlife are all examples of these challenges. In these cases, we usually fall trees away from streams, limit work on steep and unstable slopes and usually leave habitat for wildlife to mitigate the effect of timber harvesting.

Selling Your Logs

Getting the most for your logs is more than just selling to the highest bidder. It is the art of knowing where to cut your logs to maximize grade and scale which are the basis on which logs are priced and sold. It is the ability and willingness to sort and sell logs to multiple buyers. That's where we can help.

Consulting

Not sure what to do with your timberland? We help landowners understand their options. Whether you're looking to harvest, manage for the long term, sell, or improve property access, we'll walk your land, listen to your goals, and provide honest guidance on what's realistic for your situation. No obligation—just straightforward advice.

Client Testimonials

Ken Groat has been a valuable part of our tree farm for many years. His knowledge of forest practices, timber markets, and operations has been a tremendous asset. Ken developed a strong relationship with my father and continues to be someone our family can count on for advice, guidance, and help when needed.

Will A., Family Tree Farm

We hired High Mountain Resources to log four acres of our woodland lot in 2025. Ken was professional, timely, and handled our neighbors' concerns with care. He even helped coordinate the access road and prepare the property for replanting. The entire process was straightforward, and our timber payments arrived promptly.

I highly recommend High Mountain Resources for small woodland projects.

Wayne H.

Ken was knowledgeable, cautious, and well connected with local timber buyers. He helped us make the most of our property while preserving its natural beauty and important shade trees. The finished property looks like a park, and we no longer worry about trees threatening our home. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.
