Clear-Cutting Services

Clear-cutting removes all the trees from a property or designated area in a single operation.

At High Mountain Resources, we work with private landowners throughout Western Oregon who choose clear-cutting for various reasons. Whether you're transitioning the land to a new use, dealing with a diseased or overgrown stand, or preparing for replanting, we approach every project with the same commitment: professional execution and respect for your property's future.

What Clear-Cutting Accomplishes

Clearing your land removes all merchantable timber from a designated area in a single operation, unlike selective harvesting or thinning.
Done properly, clear-cutting can:

  • Transition land to a new use or purpose
  • Clear ground for replanting or restoration
  • Remove diseased or compromised stands
  • Prepare land for development
  • Reset the forest cycle for long-term productivity

Clear-cutting can be an efficient and cost-effective logging solution.

When Clear-Cutting Makes Sense

Clear-cutting works best when you have a clear vision for what comes after the harvest. Not every property needs this level of intervention, but there are specific situations where it's the right choice.

You might consider clear-cutting if you're dealing with:

  • A need to generate income from your timber.
  • An overgrown or diseased stand that won't improve with thinning
  • You want to transition land to a different use entirely
  • You're planning to replant with better-suited species
  • You're preparing for development

The best approach is to discuss your goals and timeline with someone who understands your property and can help you evaluate whether clear-cutting is right for your situation.

How We Approach Clear-Cutting

All projects start with the same process: understanding your priorities and assessing the property.

We take time to walk the land with you, understand what you want to accomplish after the work is done, and identify any environmental constraints or concerns. We address slash management, site access, erosion control on slopes, and protection of streams and sensitive areas. Environmental responsibility matters in every operation, including clear-cutting work.

From there, we manage the complete operation—felling, yarding, loading, and trucking. We handle all the logistics so you don't have to. In most cases, the value of the timber covers the costs of clearing the land, with no out-of-pocket expense to you, and provides significant income as a result.

Throughout the project, we maintain site safety and minimize impact to areas outside the designated harvest zone. When the work is complete, the land is ready for whatever comes next—whether that's replanting, development, or restoration.

Site Preparation and Slash Management

Proper site preparation is critical to a successful clear cutting project. We machine pile slash to facilitate replanting, and prepare the ground for future use.

Clear Cutting in Western Oregon

We provide clear cutting services throughout Western Oregon. We understand the specific conditions and considerations for clear cutting in this region—local markets, environmental regulations, terrain challenges, and the best practices for site recovery.

Every property is different, and clear cutting decisions can benefit from regional knowledge and experience.

Clear Cutting FAQs

How do I know if my timber is ready to harvest?

It depends on species, age, density, and your long-term goals. A site visit is the best way to determine the right timing.

Is clear-cutting bad for the environment?

Done thoughtfully, clear-cutting minimizes impact to streams, protects slopes, preserves wildlife corridors, and includes proper site preparation. Environmental responsibility is built into our approach.

What happens after clear-cutting?

That depends on your goals. Some landowners replant immediately with a chosen species, which is required by Oregon law. Some transition to a different use entirely. We help you think through what makes sense for your property.

Will clear-cutting damage my property?

A properly planned clear cutting project is designed to transition your land responsibly while preparing it for what comes next. We work to minimize erosion, protect water systems, and leave the property in usable condition.

Let's Get Started

If you're considering clear-cutting for your property, the best place to start is a conversation about your goals and vision for the land. We'll assess the property, discuss your options, and help you understand what's realistic and responsible.

Experience

With over 40 years of experience in the timber industry, the folks at High Mountain Resources know how to serve you. From quality workmanship to knowledge of other aspects of forestry, we give the landowner assurance that their job is being done right and that their property is in capable hands.

Practices

We address environmental challenges with an ethical approach. Streams, slopes and wildlife are all examples of these challenges. In these cases, we usually fall trees away from streams, limit work on steep and unstable slopes and usually leave habitat for wildlife to mitigate the effect of timber harvesting.

Selling Your Logs

Getting the most for your logs is more than just selling to the highest bidder. It is the art of knowing where to cut your logs to maximize grade and scale which are the basis on which logs are priced and sold. It is the ability and willingness to sort and sell logs to multiple buyers. That's where we can help.

Consulting

Not sure what to do with your timberland? We help landowners understand their options. Whether you're looking to harvest, manage for the long term, sell, or improve property access, we'll walk your land, listen to your goals, and provide honest guidance on what's realistic for your situation. No obligation—just straightforward advice.

Client Testimonials

Ken Groat has been a valuable part of our tree farm for many years. His knowledge of forest practices, timber markets, and operations has been a tremendous asset. Ken developed a strong relationship with my father and continues to be someone our family can count on for advice, guidance, and help when needed.

Will A., Family Tree Farm

We hired High Mountain Resources to log four acres of our woodland lot in 2025. Ken was professional, timely, and handled our neighbors' concerns with care. He even helped coordinate the access road and prepare the property for replanting. The entire process was straightforward, and our timber payments arrived promptly.

I highly recommend High Mountain Resources for small woodland projects.

Wayne H.

Ken was knowledgeable, cautious, and well connected with local timber buyers. He helped us make the most of our property while preserving its natural beauty and important shade trees. The finished property looks like a park, and we no longer worry about trees threatening our home. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.
